How Often Should I Bath my Baby?

How often should I bath my baby_Cuddledry.comHere at Cuddledry HQ, we like to think we know a thing or two about baby bathtime. And hot off the heels of the recent Baby & Toddler Show in Manchester, where we were asked lots of questions about that very topic, we thought we'd share a few blog posts answering your most common questions. This week, we're tackling the very common query: how often should I bath my baby?

It could depend on how old your baby is

Let's face it, while your baby is tiny, they don't really get too 'dirty' throughout the day. For this reason, many new parents decide to do baby bathtime a little less frequently- say, every other week, or 2-3 times a week. Others though, decide that they want to establish a bathtime routine early on, and they might choose to do baby bathtime every night. There is no rule- you do what suits your family.

Generally speaking, most babies will be ok with a top & tail wash every other day, in between bathtime. The only exception to this is, obviously, the odd nappy explosion! And if you've been there, you'll know there's really nothing else for it. It's bathtime!

The case for less is more

As your baby gets a little older and starts to enjoy bathtime, lots of parents tend to look forward to this part of the day too. it's a really lovely chance to bond with your baby and spend quality time with them, away from screens and other distractions. That said, there is a case for a less frequent baby bathtime...

Some parents prefer not to bath their baby every night, and there are many reasons why. Perhaps you want to keep your routine flexible and perhaps you don't have time for bathtime every night. Perhaps your baby has particularly sensitive skin, and you find it's better to skip bathtime now and then. Perhaps a quick wash of the face, under the chin and around the nappy area fits better with routine most days- and that's fine!

The case for bathtime every night

Some families find that having baby bathtime every night helps them to establish a good routine, especially when there are other children to factor in. Its a well known fact that bathtime can help massively when it comes to building a good bedtime routine, and some parents swear by bathtime, followed by a story and then bed. If it works, it works!

Some parents also find that baby bathtime is just such an enjoyable experience, that they (and their baby!) want to do it every night.

Do what works for you

The fact of the matter is that, no- your baby doesn't really need a bathtime every single night. In fact, they might not even need to have a bath at night time at all- lots of parents tell us that their routine works better when they do bathtime earlier in the day. As long as your little family is happy with your routine, then nothing else matters.

And before you go- no, you don't need to wait until the umbilical cord falls away before you give baby their first bath. We'll be discussing that more in the next post, so make sure you keep an eye out for it!
